Environmentally Friendly New Zealand

Submitted by Hannah Cote on the 2019 winter session study abroad program in New Zealand sponsored by the Department of Behavioral Health and Nutrition…

I did not have many expectations going into this program. I had our itinerary, I knew some of the adventures we were going on, but I didn’t know how my experiences were going to shape my thoughts and feelings about the world and new culture I was going to experience. As we arrived at the university and unpacked, I was excited to explore around the campus and the rest of the city. I noticed how environmentally cautious the stores and markets are, using reusable bags and toilets that use less amounts of water. I was in awe at the free healthy snacks for children to eat while shopping at the supermarket with their parents and how many people use bicycles as a mode of transportation, with special bike lanes in the city of Christchurch. The people that I have interacted with in New Zealand have been friendly, helpful, and very passionate about their country and its activities. I have been encouraged by the surf instructors and kayak instructors and their passion for those sports has resonated with me and has made me feel more comfortable while trying new things. When we visited the refugee center, I learned how difficult it is for refugees to assimilate into the country, but I was impressed at the efforts that New Zealand makes by having programs for them to be social and be active. I was inspired by this and wished that my country did the same for refugees; knowing that this small island makes such an effort makes me love the people of New Zealand even more.
