Politics and Brexit have been in the forefront of the local news this week. And, I had the chance to witness history firsthand. On Wednesday, three of my classmates and I went to Parliament. A family friend who works in Parliament gave us a tour. Coincidentally, he first met my Mom when she was studying abroad. We had the opportunity to enjoy a meal in the cafeteria that Members of Parliament (MPs) frequent. During our visit, we were able to sit in the front row seats above the House of Commons and watch Prime Minister Theresa May deliver a speech regarding the ‘Vote of Confidence’ which was taking place later that night. My friends and I eagerly watched the events unfold. British politicians seem much more confrontational and aggressive than American politicians. Many individuals spoke bluntly, simply telling the Prime Minister to “leave” or “step down right now” from her position.
With Brexit frequently in the news, I was aware of the conflicts occurring. However, it was incredible to watch it unfold in person. There was so much tension and division within the House of Commons. What occurs in the next few months will redefine a chapter of history.
Knowing about the historical and current political climate is important to understanding a country. I look forward to more unexpected journeys this coming week.
