Barbados: A Beautiful Place With Warm People

Submitted by Erin Sudol on the 2019 winter session program in Barbados sponsored by the Department of Human Development and Family Sciences and the Department of Hospitality Business Management…

My first week in Barbados was exciting, nerve racking, and unique. The first thing I took note of was the climate. When I boarded the plane, I was freezing cold in a jacket and by the time I stepped off of the plane I was sweating in a T-shirt. I learned from the locals that the eighty degree weather is actually on the cooler side for this island. A few patches of sunburn taught me that the sun here is much more intense than the sun back home. The second thing I noticed was the incredible scenery. We were taken on a tour of the island and shown beautiful beaches, elaborate churches, and mountains that overlook the land. When taking in the new climate change as well as the amazing sites, I also noticed how friendly the people are. When passing by, strangers will ask how you are and tell you what local places are worth checking out. This was a shock from back home where strangers do not normally make conversation. I am taken aback by the beauty of the land and the warmness of the people.

We stopped at the top of Cherry Hill during our tour. There were vendors selling jewelry and art while you could look down and see this view.
This was another stop on our tour. The picture is of me standing in front of the ocean.
