Today was my first official laundry day living in Paris. Many apartment owners here do not waste their precious space on washers and dryers, and opt to use a local laundromat. In the city, one can find a “laverie”, laundromat, every few blocks. I set out on a brisk five minute walk down my street to do my wash. I was quite anxious as I knew that I would need to use my handy Google Translate app to figure out exactly how to use the machines.
Upon my arrival, I began analyzing the small room and signs posted on the wall. I must have seemed very confused when a maintenance worker arrived and asked if it was my first time. Responding in French with a shaky voice, I replied that it was my first time at the laundromat and it would be great if he could help me. He picked up on my American accent and proceeded, in English, to walk me through the steps for using the washers and dryers, ensuring I was using the correct temperatures and washer size.
I thanked him approximately six times for his help. Our interaction did not end without the infamous “Where are you from?” that I have been answering on a daily basis. He chuckled after I responded that I was from the United States and studying here to better my French language skills. After he left, a few other Parisians came in, all offering a polite greeting to me. Although I did not catch his name, I will not forget my laundromat hero. My heart is warmed by the friendliness I have experienced here in Paris.
