Argentina: Homesickness and Ice Cream

Submitted by Christy Arango-Kautz on the 2018 fall semester program in Buenos Aires, Argentina…

With my first two weeks in Buenos Aires down and the honeymoon period of culture shock wearing off, I’ve been starting to feel bouts of homesickness. I miss the small things that would make up my daily routines back at home like going to the gym in the morning, grabbing coffee with a friend for an afternoon pick-me-up and let’s be honest, I also, really miss my dog. However, within the first two weeks, I have also been starting to set a new routine, finding small coffee shops near where I live and running through a park right down my street. The adjustment can be difficult at times and often results in harassing my Dad for photos of my dog, but I’ve slowly been finding new go-to places.

Before my first day of classes, my homesickness was pretty strong, and I had a major case of the Sunday scaries. Not wanting to dwell in my nervousness, I decided to try and find what I know can cure everything: ice cream. It only took a quick Google search and a five minute walk with a friend to get two scoops of Dulce de Leche con Oreo ice cream. Now getting Freddo’s ice cream is a Sunday night tradition and with this go-to place added to the list, Buenos Aires is starting to feel a bit more like home.
