Easter break has just ended, and I had an amazing time being a tourist in “my” city! My parents came to visit…their first trip to Europe. I planned a week full of museum and castle visits, walking around parks, landmarks and canals, and of course, trying all the traditional Danish food! My host family, being the amazing and generous people they are, not only invited my parents over to their home for a traditional Danish dinner (pork and potatoes of course!) but they also took us for a day trip to Malmø! We spent hours in a wonderful museum called the Malmohus Castle which had a diverse array of exhibits. Then, we went for a delicious lunch of smørrebrød, what Americans might call an open faced sandwich, while Danes despise that description, saying “it’s not a sandwich!”
The next day, my parents and I rented a car and made our way a couple of hours south of Copenhagen to Møns Klint, a beautiful beach with large white cliffs. We were lucky enough to have a sunny day and perfect temperatures for hiking and climbing steps up and down the cliffs. It was a breathtaking view! We walked along the rocky beach on the water’s edge and looked up at the massive white, chalky cliffs and clear blue sky above us. It was wonderful to get away from the city for the day and enjoy the wonderful nature Denmark has to offer.
The week went by way too fast, but it made me realize there are so many places I still want to visit and activities I want to do in Denmark before I leave, especially now that the weather is finally warming up! While traveling to other countries is always fun, I know that there is so much to do in the little country that I’ve called home for the last three months so far. I appreciate the freedom to discover new places and have new experiences with friends. I only have a month left here, but I will be making the most of every opportunity!
