Trieste, Italy: Medical Rotations

Submitted by Mason Willey on the 2018 winter session program in Italy sponsored by the College of Health Sciences and the College of Arts and Sciences…

In the final week of my study abroad experience, there wasn’t much traveling; however, my rotation in the internal medicine and surgery departments within the hospital were extremely interesting. I got the opportunity to observe a scar tissue removal following a patient’s mastectomy in the hospital’s operating room. I was also able to meet some of the most amazing surgeons who were both entertaining (one of them being a magician, who showed us several of his most famous coin tricks) and inspiring, who I hope to stay in contact with in the future. Outside of the hospital, I was able to explore Trieste more thoroughly with some of the most amazing people. Before this program, I knew a couple people, but on this program, I have made some fantastic new friends who I will always be able to reach out to when we get back to campus. As we explored the city, we were able to see some Roman ruins, including an amphitheater, archway and pillars. We also stopped by the city’s pier and visited Miramare Castle, located on the outskirts of the city. Between all of these beautiful sights and the wonderful friends I have made on this program, this has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life, giving me some amazing memories that I will forever cherish.
