Out of My Comfort Zone in Trieste, Italy

Submitted by Miranda Ward on the 2018 winter session program in Italy sponsored by the College of Health Sciences and the College of Arts and Sciences…

Three short weeks in Trieste has allowed me to not only discover the beauty of an unfamiliar area, but to also discover qualities and capabilities of myself that required a breach of my comfort zone to surface. I had never traveled to a foreign country before, let alone worked in a hospital with some intense cultural barriers. I was shocked with how easily I handled tough situations and communicated with people with an entirely different language. I have built relationships with people that I believe will turn into lifelong friendships. There is so much more out in the world than my small suburban home town and Trieste has given me a taste of what it has to offer.
