Australia: Excursion to Tasmania

Submitted by Aaron Whitenight on the 2018 winter session program in Australia sponsored by the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering…

Tasmania has definitely been the highlight of the program so far. The first day here, after a whole day of midterms and flying, we went to a Wildlife Sanctuary and were able to see Tasmanian Devils, wombats, koalas and even pet kangaroos! The kangaroos were so fun, I want to adopt one for a pet when I grow up. They are just like dogs.  I couldn’t believe how friendly they were, the little ones were falling asleep in my lap! I wish we had an entire day at the sanctuary as I will definitely never forget about this place.

The day after we saw the kangaroos, we went to a National Park and a few of us went climbing up Mt. Amos. We had no idea how hard the hiking was going to be, it was more like rock climbing. Three of the seven who started the hike had to turn around it was so tough. The view at the top was definitely worth the climb though, since it was amazing! We were able to see Wine Glass Bay, the other mountain tops, a city behind the mountain and  a bunch of small lizards in the rocks. After the hike, we found a nice beach and went swimming to cool down some, it was really hot on that day.

Unfortunately, our trip to Tasmania did have to come to an end and we flew back to Melbourne and started up class again. It was tough going back to a city after seeing such a beautiful place like Tasmania.

A picture of myself with a kangaroo at the wildlife sanctuary. There must have been 45 kangaroos of  all different sizes. It was a great break from the midterms we took the day before.
Me at the top of Mt. Amos. The beach is Wine Glass Bay and most of the other students went down to that instead.
