Athens, Greece: National Garden

Submitted by Nicole Anacay on the 2018 spring semester program in Athens, Greece sponsored by the College of Education & Human Development…

This weekend, I explored the National Garden which I walk past every day to get to school. I see tourists and visitors going in all the time and wanted to see what the excitement was. Giant palm trees, the ones you think of when you imagine driving along the beach on the West Coast, were at the main entrance. There were plots of colorful flowers planted throughout, ranging in color from orange, white, yellow and others. The garden had fountains and ponds with running water as well. There were multiple playgrounds and benches for people to enjoy. In the very middle of the garden were fenced in areas which I found were for animals. The animals in the cages ranged from turtles, peacocks, bunnies, goats and more. The animals were in outdoor cages with no covering. I was confused as to who takes care of the animals as many of them seemed hurt and injured. I plan on checking around to see it anyone takes care of the animals and if it is possible to volunteer!
