A Month of Growth in Martinique

Submitted by Taurence Chisholm on the 2018 winter session program in Martinique sponsored by the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures…

This final week was probably the most chill. My friends threw me a birthday party and my roommate and I wrote a poem for my host family. And they cried (bow followed by applause). It was extremely exciting because my host family also gave me a cake after we ate ham and cheese crepes which were delicious. This month has been one of great reflection, as most of the time my WiFi did not work; recognizing my limits, because at times it would get exhausting and stressful not fully understanding everything; and facing fears, because if you want that six piece nugget with a M&M Mcflurry…you’ve got to ask for it yourself. All in all, my French improved and I am very satisfied with the experience. Like any, it had its ups and downs, it’s low points and it’s “we should’ve never been here” points. But I’m stronger for it, and I would recommend it.
