Sydney, Australia: Public Transportation

Submitted by Kylie McLaughlin on the 2018 winter session program in Australia and New Zealand sponsored by the Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics…

One of my favorite things about Sydney is how easy it is to travel to the most beautiful and iconic places. We take the train almost every day and not only is it much cleaner than any public transportation I have ever been on, but it is super quick and easy to navigate unlike the subway in New York. It never gets old passing by the Circular Quay (pronounced like “key”) station and catching a glimpse of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Opera House. The other day, we toured the Opera House on the same day that Sam Smith was performing and our tour was timed perfectly because we were standing outside the theatre while Sam Smith was doing his sound check. Since he was in there, we were unable to see the theatre even though we kept begging our tour guide to let us in. The weather has been beautiful here and makes the water look so much clearer and bluer when there’s not a cloud in the sky. We’ve also been using the public transportation to go to the beaches, which are massive. Yesterday, we went to Bondi Beach and rented out surfboards to try and teach ourselves how to surf. We realized we probably should have just bought lessons, but it was fun trying. We then walked from Bondi to Coogee Beach which had an incredible view, but was definitely tiring.
