Australia: Night Market in Melbourne

Submitted by Aaron Whitenight on the 2018 winter session program in Australia sponsored by the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering…

It was so nice getting out of a cold Delaware winter and being able to put on flip flops again! My week included lots of exploring with my classmates and traveling through the city. We met so many nice people in the city who were always eager to tell us about secrets throughout the city. I was amazed at the beautiful art that I saw everywhere we went. Huge murals covered most alleys and the walls along the train lines. There was always something new and even cooler than the last piece of art that I saw while walking around. Some locals at a restaurant recommended that we walk to Fitzroy which definitely did not disappoint. There were tons of great places for food and the art was so interesting.

On Wednesday night, most of us in the group went to the Night Market in the city. My first time there, I was overwhelmed by the food, shops and all of the people. There were at least 20 different types of food to choose from, including Jamaican, Thai, Indian, Chinese, even Texas BBQ. I got a Poke Bowl which was like deconstructed sushi and it was delicious. It was hard not to get lost while walking around, we were packed into the building very tightly. I can definitely see this becoming a weekly trend for myself while in Melbourne.

A mural I saw while walking in Fitzroy. It was on the side of one of the taller buildings in the area, the picture doesn’t do the precision of the artists work justice.
The Night Market in Melbourne. It is crowded with people and all the smoke from the food carts makes it impossible to see the end of the sea of people.
