Introduction to Martinique

Submitted by Kaylee Drab on the 2018 winter session program in Martinique sponsored by the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures…

So far, Martinique has been incredible.  Everything here from the food to the people and the overall culture is absolutely breathtaking, not to mention the views.

Each day we get to travel to a new and exciting part of the island and listen to individuals teach us about the historical and cultural backgrounds found here in Martinique.  I finally feel as though my years of studying French language and culture are validated as I see and hear it laid out before me.  So far this week, we have visited the capital city of Fort de France, and learned the background of a famous writer Aime Cesar and his importance on this island, as well as taken a 5 mile hike through La Caravelle and gotten views of the entire north Atlantic side of the island.
