At a Loss for Words in Hawaii

Submitted by Nicole Benway on the 2018 winter session program in Hawaii sponsored by the Department of Biological Sciences…

This past week has me at a loss for words. Just seven days ago I was on the East Coast, freezing in a winter coat with long pants and boots, and now I am in Hawaii snorkeling on the beach and watching fish in 80 degree weather. My friends and family sound very confused when I tell them that I am completing my science with lab requirement in Hawaii, but I have learned a lot more in these past few days than I think I would learn sitting in a classroom. Being able to observe the fish in their natural habitat and then having my professor tell us facts about the fish is the perfect way for me to learn.

Every day here is a new adventure and I am enjoying every single moment. I love waking up to the sun rising to the left of my hotel balcony. It peaks right after the mountain and slowly comes up, allowing me to have another amazing day on this scenic island. I have seen many views of green grasses and mountains lying next to beautiful blue waters and white cloudy skies such as the Pali Lookout.

I love ending my days here watching the sunset at around 6 o’ clock every night. So far my classmates and I have tried to watch it at a different location every night. I send the picture of the sunset to my family members every night (really 11 at night where they are) wishing that they can experience the same beauty that I am. Words cannot describe how thankful I am to have this opportunity so far and I can’t wait to see what the next few weeks bring!
