Spain: Málaga

Submitted by Miranda Schiccatano on the 2017 summer session program in Granada, Spain sponsored by the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures…

I took a weekend trip to Málaga, Spain to experience the beach and visit the Pablo Picasso Museum. The trip was approximately a two-hour bus ride from Granada, but worth the time to see the beautiful city.

Straight from the bus station, the group and I went to the Pablo Picasso Museum. It was something special to view Picasso’s artwork in the city in which he was born. His art has always interested me and I figured there is no better place to celebrate the artist than in Málaga.

There were so many restaurant choices in this city that it was hard to decide where to eat. We decided on a restaurant where I got some of the best salmon I have ever had in my life. Although I have been enjoying trying new things and eating what my host mom has been cooking, it was nice to have a meal I was used to eating at home and it did not disappoint.

Our next stop while in Málaga was the beach. We went to a beach called Malagueta. It was great to be able to go to the beach for the entire day to just relax with my friends on this program. The beach was absolutely incredible, the view was unbeatable with palm trees, clear water and mountainous terrain in the background. It was incredibly hot and I definitely got a little more sunburn than I would have liked, but the time spent on the beach was well worth it. I am so glad I had the chance to experience a beach in Spain and see how it compares to beaches in the United States. It made me feel a little more at home to be able to take a quick weekend trip to the beach with friends like I can at home. I am glad that we are able to choose our experiences on the weekends. This weekend trip to Málaga was just what I needed!
