Spain: Hospital Experience

Submitted by Kyla Cerce on the 2017 winter session program in Spain sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences…

As my time in the Miguel Servet Hospital sadly comes to an end, I have nothing but positive things to say about my experience. After three weeks of shadowing different doctors in the orthopedic, ophthalmology and obstetrics departments, I have come to realize that the health care system is very different in Spain. During orthopedic surgery, I was surprised at how the surgeons did not wear eye protection and were desensitized by getting blood on their face and bone in their eyes! Also, having the opportunity to watch a childbirth for the first time was life changing. As excited as I am to return to the United States, I cannot wait to travel back to Spain!
