Hungary: Making Special Memories

Submitted by Nicole Mejia on the 2017 winter session program in Austria and Hungary sponsored by the College of Education and Human Development…

This week, studying abroad was more challenging because I felt more concerned about everything occurring back home. It was very bizarre to realize that so many changes were going to begin occurring in our country while I was so far away. It was strange to think that after the study abroad program was over, we would all be returning to a new presidency and a new atmosphere in the country. It felt odd being updated about the inauguration through social media. At some points, it was challenging to just live in the moment. How could I possibly carry on with my experience studying abroad as if nothing major was occurring at home? How could I wholeheartedly enjoy my tourist excursions in a new country knowing that back home there are thousands of individuals panicking for their safety and acceptance in their own country, in the only place they call home?

Nonetheless, this week was a reminder of what it actually means to study abroad. I was reminded that studying abroad is all about meeting new challenges and being placed out of your comfort zone. It means being flexible and adapting to your environment in order to overcome the challenges. Studying abroad has given me an even greater sense of independence and it has helped me reflect on my character and my dreams in this world. This past week was a great opportunity to reflect on the different experiences and memories I have created abroad and where I will go from here.

We recently had our extended weekend. I stayed in Budapest, Hungary and climbed up to Gellert Hill with two of my classmates. It was an icy climb to the top, but the view was most definitely worth it. When we had reached almost the very top of the hill, we sat in a spot that looked over most of Budapest. You could see the Hungarian Parliament Building, and the many buildings and bridges along the Danube River. The sky was a bit foggy, but the sun was shining above us, the sky was a beautiful color and the weather was great. It was such a serene moment. As I looked over the beautiful view, I just felt very calm and I was reminded of how special this opportunity to be in a new country and explore a new culture is.

I am looking forward to enjoying each of my remaining days here in Hungary to the fullest. I want to make as many more memories as possible, I want to live in the moment, and I want to cherish this opportunity before it itself becomes an experience from my past.
