As our time is dwindling down, and the program is so very close to being over, we departed Budapest for a small getaway to a remote town called Eger. Eger is situated in the northwestern part of Hungary and is as quiet as one can possibly imagine. As we arrived, we were greeted with ice and snow and brutal temperatures. This short excursion was all about relaxation and catching up on our schoolwork!
After we were all rested up, visited the spa, the thermal baths and some had “fish pedicures”, we were looking to embrace some culture. We were given a recommendation by one of our directors to try out this restaurant right in the middle of the town’s park. As we ventured through the snowy winds and icy terrain, we came upon Excalibur. This was an old fashioned renaissance restaurant, with a sword stuck in a sword, and a “guard” in armor “protecting” the entrance. Once inside, it was quite dim lit and had renaissance music playing, all throughout the restaurant. The menu was translated in English, but the way in which it was written was hilarious!
When the food came, I could not believe what I saw. My food came on a sword, an actual cast iron sword. It was amazing; it really captured the culture of the place and made for an amazing time. I’m looking forward to our last few days here in Budapest before we come home.
