Vienna, Austria: Navigating the Underground

Submitted by Shane Gorman on the 2017 winter session program in Austria and Hungary sponsored by the College of Education and Human Development…

My first week abroad was in Vienna, Austria. The architecture was so magnificent it almost didn’t seem real. Our hotel was right next to St. Stephen’s Cathedral in central Vienna. After climbing 300 steps to the top of the tower, I took this picture overlooking the city. It really was a beautiful sight and reminded me of how lucky I am to have this opportunity.

Since our hotel was located in central Vienna, it was extremely easy to get around. The Underground stop was extremely accessible. we were all able to follow it without much difficultly. Something interesting that I noticed about the underground in Vienna is that when taking the escalator either down or up, people just standing on it, stand in a single-file line to the right. People who want to walk down the escalator do so on the left side passing those who are just standing. This is different from America, but I think more sensible!
