Spain: Eating and Sleeping

Submitted by Brianna Falcone on the 2017 spring semester program in Granada …

I am finishing up my very first week here in Granada!  It is a very different culture here, and it can be hard to adjust to the different timing of meals.  In Spain, they eat a large lunch at around 2:00 or 3:00  and a smaller dinner around 9:00 or 10:00.  Adjusting to this new eating schedule has been much easier since I am lucky enough to live with a wonderful host mom who cooks all of my (delicious) meals.  It has been difficult to get used to the long break between breakfast and lunch, especially since I usually don’t eat much for breakfast.  My friends and I have adopted a habit of going to a “cafetería” after class to hold us over until lunch.  There, we can get coffee and snacks such as the “churros con chocolate” pictured.  After lunch, when I am full and content, it is time for “siesta,” a midday resting time that I take full advantage of.  Finally, after a full day of exploring and enjoying beautiful Granada, I enjoy another amazing meal prepared by my host mother for dinner.  Regardless of the wacky schedule, I am thoroughly adoring (eating in) Spain!
