Hola! I have been in the beautiful city of Barcelona for about a week now and so far, I am extremely pleased with my experience! This is not my first time here, however. Two summers ago, I visited for 4 days as a vacation trip with my mom and sister. The great thing about studying and working abroad is that I can now distinguish between my experience as a tourist and as a foreigner trying to assimilate into the culture. As a tourist, I was able to see the spectacular buildings, monuments and spaces that the city is equipped with as well as observe the way locals live their lives. But, with studying and interning abroad, I’ve had to interact with the locals on a much more engaging level.
In interacting with the locals, what has struck me the most so far, is the way everyone in Barcelona greets one another. In America, we introduce ourselves to a stranger by sticking our hands out, grasping the other person’s hand and then shaking firmly. In comparison, locals in Barcelona introduce themselves by leaning in for two kisses, one on each cheek. I was happily surprised by this warm introduction. To me, this gesture indicates that closeness is valued, whereas, a handshake indicates that space and formality is valued. Overall, I’ve been really enjoying my interaction with the locals and each time I introduce myself to someone new, I love the new friendly gesture I must use!
