Morocco: Crossing the Border

Submitted by Hayden Fulton on the 2017 winter session program in Morocco sponsored by the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures…

Salta is the province that belongs to Spain that is in Africa. I had no idea that Spain had a colony in Africa so it was pretty cool to travel to this part of the country that I didn’t know existed. It was a very unusual experience because of how the cultures change as soon as you cross the border. Leaving a Muslim country and entering a Spanish colony was so cool though. The streets were different. They no longer had markets on the street and people yelling at you to buy their product. In Salta, the streets were calm with people eating and drinking at tables. Crossing the border was the weirdest experience, I might have ever had. Normally, we fly over borders, but walking across the border was a creepy feeling.

Hercules Cave is outside Tánger which we drove to. I did not know there was a place called Hercules Cave before this program either. Apparently, this is where Hercules killed a monster. Traveling to this cave was also cool because when you look through the cave you see the continent of Africa flipped. Traveling to the cave shows how our program is not just to cities or the desert but we also go to old Greek cities. Traveling to this part of Morocco was a great experience.
