Greece: It’s All Greek to Me

Submitted by Philip Swaney on the 2017 winter session program in Athens, Greece sponsored by the Department of English…

Being in Greece these past few days has truly been a life-changing experience, and it’s not even halfway over. There is so much history on every corner and I just want to learn it all. I have seen so many incredible structures and places. So far, we have visited the Acropolis to see the Parthenon as well as other monuments up on the hill. We have also visited the museum and the Agora, an ancient Greek shopping market. At every stop, I learn so many new and interesting facts as I admire the brilliance of these beautiful places.

Since I’ve never been to Europe, I didn’t know what to expect from the people. Would they be rude or helpful? Will they think that I am an annoying tourist? Well luckily, everyone so far has been quite friendly and is so excited that I am here to visit their amazing country. Waiters and restaurant owners will never kick you out of an establishment for being there too long. They want you to stay and enjoy your time there, eat and be happy with your friends.

The picture attached was taken from atop the Acropolis. It is the Erechtheion, one of the structures, along with the Parthenon, that can be seen from almost anywhere in the city. It is dedicated to the Greek gods Athena and Poseidon. The detail and structure were really what captured my attention.

I am so excited to learn more about the history of ancient Greece and see the incredible structures that have been constructed in and outside of Athens. I have had nothing, but a pleasant experience so far in this amazing country.
