England: Dover Castle

Submitted by Katelyn Hummel on the 2017 winter session program in London, England sponsored by the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice…

One day, we went to Dover Castle which is a little over two hours outside of London. When we got there it was beautiful. Even though the weather was foggy and rainy, it was still extremely picturesque as the Dover Castle stood on the white cliffs of Dover along the shore. Walking into this castle was like getting a ticket into the past because it was built approximately during the 11th century!

Then we went through the old World War II Tunnels that run underground around the castle. If I could remember correctly, we were about 150 km below the surface. As we walked through, our tour guide told us that the tunnels are about 4 miles long, and our tour took us through about 3/4 of a mile worth of tunnel. It is very easy to get lost down there, but our group stayed together and enjoyed learning the history behind all of the tunnel’s functions and why they were built.

I love learning about history, but being there and actually seeing it in person is something that is truly special. That is why this particular location has been one of my favorites so far.
