Barbados: Natural Wonders

Submitted by Victoria Giannini on the 2017 winter session program in Barbados sponsored by the Department of Human Development and Family Studies…

This week went by so fast! We never stopped! I really feel like this week I experienced the culture of this island more than anything else. I had another great few days at Sharon Primary School, where I feel like I finally made some connections with some of the children who took a little while to warm up to me. The island of Barbados is build on limestone and coral–which is different from other islands because many are built on volcanoes! This week, we learned a lot about the natural wonders of Barbados.

A few of us went on a Cave and Critters Tour on the island. We got to visit Harrison’s Cave which has been around for many years, but wasn’t explored until around 1970. This cave is active and has pools of crystal clear water. It was really interesting. We then were taken to the Barbados Wildlife Reserve where we would get to see a lot of animals. We got there just in time for feeding! They prepare a giant pile of potatoes and sweet potatoes for the animals to eat as they please. It was really interesting to watch and it was something I had never seen before! The tortoises walked the pathways with us and they were able to go wherever they want!
