Submitted by Brianna Ramirez on the 2016 fall semester study abroad program in Granada, Spain…
This weekend, our program took us to see two of the most iconic cities of Andalucía. We first traveled to Córdoba and we walked around the judería (Jewish quarter), one of the few still conserved in Spain and we went to the famous Mezquita. It was interesting to see how the architecture in this city is similar to that of Granada and Sevilla. The Mezquita was very different from the other historical sites we saw because of the distinct colors, pillars and arches. Also, the mixture of Islamic and Christian art could be seen everywhere.
The next day, we traveled to Sevilla, and thus far, it has been my favorite city in Spain. The Plaza de España is like a dream, absolutely stunning. Its shape is a semi-circle and they say that it is like the city is hugging the people. The colors are beautiful and the sun and warm weather made the experience even more magical. Fun fact: There is a scene in the second Star Wars film that was shot in that plaza. We also visited the Alcazar and went to the Giralda where we climbed 35 ramps to see the view of the whole city. That afternoon, we returned to Granada and were able to enjoy the rest of our weekend in our own city.
