Dominica: Scott’s Head

Submitted by Amber Perlmutter on the 2016 winter session program in Dominica sponsored by the Department of Geography…

We took a trip to Soufriere Beach during our stay in Dominica. Expecting white sandy beaches, I was surprised to see that the beaches were not what I was used to; it was covered by dark volcanic rocks. We went to an area called Scott’s Head, where the Caribbean and Atlantic Oceans meet. The Caribbean side was calm, while the Atlantic was rough with strong currents. We had the opportunity to go snorkeling and saw a wide variety of marine life including fish, corals, eels and even a sea turtle! We spent the day exploring, hiking and snorkeling and ended the day by watching the sunset. The view from the top of the mountain was absolutely breathtaking. The images that we captured through the lenses of our cameras could not do the real images any justice. We were amazed by how crystal clear blue the water appeared to be and how green the mountainous vegetation was.
