Submitted by Katie Holland on the 2015 winter session program in London sponsored by the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice
This week in London was just as amazing as the last. After class on Monday, we had a walking tour of an old operating theatre where surgeries were performed before anesthesia was used. It really opened my eyes to how lucky we are with all the advances that we have in medicine today. As a class, we also went to the Tower of London which was absolutely stunning. Yes, we have old structures in the United States, but old for us is 300 years, old for England is over 500 years old which makes everything seem that much more surreal.
A few of us, after class on Thursday went over to the Harry Potter studios. We got to walk around and see all the real sets that were used in the films, as well as the costumes that the actors wore.
This weekend, about twelve of us travelled to Ireland. We stayed in Dublin, but a few of us wanted to see the countryside so we took a day trip to the Cliffs of Moher. It was one of the top moments of my life. I have never experienced anything as beautiful as the coast of west Ireland.
It’s crazy how in two weeks, I can easily say that I have made some of my closest friends on this program. You come in a stranger with about 26 people, and end up feeling like you’ve known them forever after only a few weeks. These past two weeks have flown by. With two weeks down, that sadly means only two more amazing weeks to go, and I plan to take them in to the fullest!
