Ahoj, mate: A weekend in Prague

Submitted by Pauline Zilch on the 2014 winter session program in Spain and Italy sponsored by the Department of Political Science and International Relations…

Yes, I said Ajoj, not Ahoy. (AKA how you say “hello” in the Czech Republic.) This is our group’s last week abroad and with our final exams behind us, we were free to travel anywhere we wanted this past weekend. After some debate over what European city would be next on our list, eight of us finally agreed on Prague. Not knowing much about the Czech culture, I was so excited for a few days on our own to travel as we pleased. Prague was a bit frigid, but absolutely stunning. Everything was different from what we’ve seen so far from the look of its people to its architectural details. The scenery of the city is very picturesque with castle tops always in sight and multiple bridges to overlook the beautiful river that flows throughout the city. We were sure to tour both the new and old towns of the area which included the famous John Lennon wall and the city’s presidential castle.  We ate and drank everything from fried cheese to bagels to cinnamon dough rolls  to coconut flavored hot chocolate. All in all the weekend may have been chilly, but well worth it. This is definitely a city I would return to, maybe next time in a bit warmer weather.
