Scottish Accent

Submitted by Megan Zant on the 2014 winter session study abroad program in London, England sponsored by the Department of History…

Another week in London brings more unforgettable memories and incredible experiences. We spent the week visiting locations such as the Sir John Soane’s Museum, an incredible interior decorator’s home from the 1800’s, and learning about social class in historical London. Class, this week, concluded on Thursday, giving us the opportunity to travel outside of London. Groups of students dispersed amongst different countries and I went to Edinburgh, Scotland. It was much colder than London, but absolutely beautiful and we were able to be out in nature for the weekend. The city is also incredible and everyone is very friendly and helpful to foreigners like us.  Throughout the past few weeks, I have adjusted to the British accent, however, I was not prepared for the Scottish accent! It was incredibly difficult to understand and almost seemed as though they were speaking a different language. With that aside, we had a beautiful weekend and were so happy to be given the opportunity to travel.
