Today was a memorable day to say the least. We started our morning off with a trip to the Roberto Burle Marx architect’s office. Isabella, the daughter of Haruyoshi Ono who worked with Burle Marx, showed us her current and past projects while emphasizing the importance of scale when planning out a new space. This office was filled with incredible artwork which was just surreal being surrounded with these infamous pieces. One theme we have noticed in Rio is the presence of Burle Marx throughout the Brazilian culture. Not only have we seen his style and design on streets by the beach, but just tonight walking around we saw more of his designs on a restaurant wall, and on beach towels. His work seems to bring everyone together and it is a unique characteristic of Rio.
After we visited the office we went to the top of a the IRB Brazil RE building to walk through a green roof garden that was reconstructed after Burle Marx. As a group, we then went to a very nice buffet for lunch, Confeitaria Colombo, which offered countless types of food from fish, beef, chicken, and delicious desserts.
After class, we finished the day off by laying on the beach and then walking out to the tip of the Arpoador rock for sunset. The rock is filled of trails and views of Copacabana, Ipanema, Christ the Redeemer, and a beautiful sunset along the crashing waves.
Thanks,
