This morning, we had class and did short two minute sketches during lecture about art in gardens. Afterwards, we headed to Santa Theresa, which is a artistic town in the mountains, via trolley. There, we tried feijoada at a critically acclaimed restaurant (Bar de Mineiro) which has been visited by famous foodies. Feijoada is slow cooked meat along side rice, beans, kale and sometimes pumpkin. It was a great experience to be able to try the food that is such an important staple in Brazilian culture. Afterwards, we shopped around, looking in local art shops. That night, a majority of students participated in a food and bar tour, where we visited Lapa and an off the map neighborhood with hole in the wall bars. This neighborhood in not usually visited by tourists, but showed us how Brazilians really eat and drink. We also visited a samba bar, and danced to Brazilian music with locals, and felt like a part of the community. Our tour guide would explain all food and beverage so it was also an educational and cultural experience. We tried popular Brazilian food, such and pastels, Romeo and Juliet, and cucuruqui (cheese, pork and farofa). Overall, it was a great food day for us, filled with lots of cultural and fun experiences. Through the lunch and food tour we have come to appreciate Brazilian flavors, and how their food is local and inspired by what is grown around them.
