On friday we woke up for breakfast and were reluctant to leave the local guides we had bonded with. Although we had not been able to speak to them due to our lack of portugese, we still felt like we had connected with them and become friends by the end of the week. After a motorboat ride we were back at the Tefe airport. Although a wooden hair piece was too dangerous for security to let pass, a pocket knife success made it through. In Manaus, we went on a bus tour visiting a stinky fish market and historic opera house while practicing our one and two point perspective sketching. One of the things Manaus is known for its rubber boom periods.
On Saturday we woke up early in the morning to travel to Rio Janeiro. So far Rio had felt modern. Full of life and activities. The architecture it complemented by abundant greenery. Today, this Sunday after class, some people went to the hippie fair and others to the beach.
The beach was insanely crowded. Cangas were the first purchase at the beach. Once seated vendors continued to approach offering a variety of food and drinks. The acai popsicles were marketed as a different Kardashian as each flavor. The water was so warm and enjoyable, and if you forgot a suit no problem, bikinis are sold by vendors too. The hippie market offered clothes, art, jewelry, and more. In the center of the park paintings lined the paths.
Experiencing the rainforest was amazing, but we were ready to come to Rio and experience another side of Brazil. Alec bought three cheeseburgers on the beach for R$10. We’re excited to see more of Rio.
