1/13/18 Bike in Flamingo Park – Cate & Melissa

Published on: Author: melissa lynn

We rented bikes from a shop around the corner from our hotel and set off on a leisurely ride to Flamingo Park. It was difficult dodging cars and runners, but we managed to make it to our destination. Flamingo Park was designed by Roberto Burle Marx and it is considered to be one of his most important projects. In the park people are encouraged to hang out on the beach or get some exercise on the many trails. The park was crowded and seemed to be a good escape from the concrete jungle around us, creating a deep sense of place and connection.

On our ride we came across a WWII Memorial (shown in the photo) that recognizes the Brazilian soldiers who fought abroad during the war. After a short stop, we made our way to a populated square and found a nice spot to practice our sketching. In this exercise we sketched our partners face with many laughs. While sketching we were entertained by dozens of little kids covered in padding learning to roller blade. Overall, Flamingo Park is a pleasant place to partake in various activities while experiencing beautiful architectural designs.
