Today we visited the Jardim Botanico, a beautiful oasis within the crazy city of Rio de Janeiro! The Jardim Botanico is one of the oldest gardens in Brazil, which started in 1808, 210 years ago! This garden contained thousands of different species of plants, from cacti, succulents, bromeliads, lilies, trees, shrubs, palms, and many others. We were amazed by the diversity and varieties of bromeliad species. There was an entire greenhouse dedicated to these fascinating plants. One of the most impressive features is the two 750 meter avenue of royal palm trees, all descended from a single, now dead tree. Some students saw a capybara, monkeys, and interesting insects. There is so much to see at Jardim Botanico; we wish we could have spent more time there!
