Managing poultry litter is an important part of poultry and crop production in our region. Whether you are handling litter as a poultry grower or a crop farmer, poultry litter can be critical component of your business. This module consists of two factsheets. First is “Avoiding Fires in Poultry Litter Dry Stack Sheds “ from Mississippi State University Extension. This factsheet discusses spontaneous combustion of poultry litter while in storage, risk factors, and best management practices to help avoid fires. The second factsheet “Nutrient Content and Composition of Poultry Litter” from Alabama A&M and Auburn Universities discusses nutrient composition of poultry litter and how variations in the nutrient content occur. These readings will provide you with information that show how management decisions impact the nutrient content of litter.
