The Perry Initiative

The Perry Initiative is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization committed to inspiring young women to be leaders in the fields of orthopaedic surgery and engineering, two fields in which women are drastically under-represented. We seek high school students with an expressed interest in engineering, orthopaedic surgery, and/or medicine. Women and all gender identities are welcome to apply. Admissions will be based on the quality of the application essays and student career interests. Previous applicants and older students (who have fewer chances to reapply) will receive preference.

The Perry Initiative developed Orthopaedics In Action (OIA) a unique, hands-on curriculum for middle and high school STEM classrooms that features real-world challenges from orthopaedic surgery and biomedical engineering. OIA features stand-alone 45-60 minute lessons appropriate for Grades 7 through 12 classrooms. OIA maps to Next Generation Science Standards and covers multiple Disciplinary Core Ideas and Science and Engineering Practices. It is designed specifically to bridge the gap between bioscience and engineering coursework and reinforce cross-cutting concepts in math and science.

The Perry Initiative and our partners are committed to providing Orthopaedics In Action to educators nationwide at a low cost and with high-quality lesson plans and video professional development materials. Information about how educators can preview OIA lessons or purchase these materials can be found on our website.
