Italy: Coffee in Trieste

Submitted by Rachel Magee on the 2018 winter session program in Italy sponsored by the College of Health Sciences and the College of Arts and Sciences…

As the second week of my program is coming to a close, I am really starting to get accustomed to life in Trieste, Italy. Getting used to the odd hours that stores and restaurants keep, has definitely been a struggle, especially when it comes to dinner. Italians usually close their restaurants around 3:00 pm and don’t reopen for dinner until 7:00 or 7:30pm and my body was not ready for eating dinner so late. The one thing you can always count on being open though, is their signature caffès serving all kinds of espresso drinks. Coffee is a big deal in Trieste, so big they have their own special lingo for ordering, which makes it very easy to tell if you’re not a local. Trieste is also known for the big coffee company, illy, which started in this city.
