Italy: Finding Balance While Abroad

Submitted by Virginia Cruz-Ayala on the 2017 spring semester program in Rome, Italy…

As we start to get into the swing of things with the beginning of classes, it becomes a useful skill to be mindful of keeping a balance. Being abroad provides you with many opportunities to make the most of your time here, but you often have to pick and find that balance; Whether you want to go out for the night or stay in and read your homework. For some people, the former would be the obvious choice, but as an over-achiever, it becomes anxiety inducing to feel like you’re falling behind on classes even though you know you should be getting out there and making the most of this experience. As a study abroad student in Rome, you want to go out to dinner EVERY SINGLE NIGHT because the food is just that delicious. But at the same time, you know you are balling on a budget and have to save money for when you go on trips. Speaking about trips, you also have to find the balance between exploring what all the different countries in Europe have to offer and spending time in your own city/country. I think this perfect balance can be achieved though; I am currently writing this entry on a plane on the way back to Rome from a weekend in Belgium. It’s all about working hard in your free time so you can have free time to explore. As to what to do about saving on food, I did go grocery shopping and have made a couple meals at home, but I treat myself to Alle Fratte Di Trastevere, my favorite restaurant, every now and then. But for now, I’m just rolling with the punches and taking life day by day, finding balance.
