Over 150 people joined us for the 2014 WIE ice cream social, held on the back patio of the ISELab. It was a beautiful day to get together with colleagues and enjoy ice cream from the UDairy Creamery.
Meet Your Faculty Lunch

A crowd of close to 30 people packed into Evans 204 to get to know more about Prof. Hui Fang and her work. We thank Dr. Fang, assistant professor in electrical and computer engineering, for her practical and inspiring words. Dr. Fang holds affiliations with the Department of Computer and Information Sciences, the Institute for Financial Services Analytics and the Center for Bioinformatics and Computational Biology. Her research interests relates to information retrieval, knowledge base, data mining, and biomedical informatics. She gave excellent advice on writing papers, presenting at conferences, networking at conferences, and creating and maintaining one’s brand as a researcher.
Grad School Panel for Undergraduates

Approximately 25 undergraduate students attended this year’s panel on graduate school co-sponsored by WIE and the UD Honors Program. This year’s event took place in the ISELab atrium. Students asked great questions and learned a lot from the graduate-student panelists.
Spring Coffee Break

The spring 2014 coffee break took place in Colburn lab, co-hosted by the departments of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. The turnout was our best yet! WIE committee members handed out bookmarks to attendees who were enjoying a break from the lab.
International Student Workshop

Around 40 graduate students, postdocs, and COE staff members attended the 2014 workshop for international students in engineering. Frances O’Brien from the Office of International Students and Scholars offered an informative presentation on visa and green card procedures for scientists and engineers. We thank Frances for her presentation and for leaving plenty of time for questions. Download Frances’ presentation here. We were especially happy to welcome staff members from several engineering departments. The workshop was followed by a reception in Spencer Lab.
Meet Your Faculty Lunch: Dr. Jennifer McConnell

Seventeen graduate students, postdocs, and faculty joined Dr. Jennifer McConnell, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering, for the first “Meet Your Faculty” lunch of the year. Dr. McConnell led a workshop on efficient work practices for graduate students and faculty, based upon her experience with the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity Summer Faculty Success Program. WIE thanks Dr. McConnell for sharing helpful tips and strategies as well as funny personal stories during this enjoyable event.

Pizza Welcome Lunch for New Women Graduate Students

We welcomed incoming women engineering graduate students with a pizza lunch in CCM 106 on September 6. Around 40 women graduate students, postdocs, and faculty enjoyed lunch and each other’s company. Priscilla Moraes, chair of the WIE Graduate Student Steering Committee, gave a brief presentation about the WIE graduate student program and presented each WIE committee member with a thank-you gift. Bahar Ipek, co-chair, led attendees in a trivia game.
