Ace Your Next Interview: Key Strategies for Success

Interviewing is a skill that we often don’t learn in school but has a significant impact in how we navigate the professional world. Our resumes and cover letters get our feet in the door but it’s often the way we interview that seals the deal. So, to ensure that we are positioned for future success, this guide will equip you with key strategies to excel in your interviews!

Always Do Your Homework!

Research what the company does, what the company culture is like, their values, recent news, etc. It’s important to know why you want to work there and why you would be a good fit at this company. All of this behind-the-scenes work prevents surprises while preparing you for the interviewer’s questions.

Prepare and Practice Interview Questions

Create practice interview questions that pertain to your interests, skills, and job descriptions. Don’t focus on memorizing your answers but prepare some answers so you have an idea of what you want to say. A great way to test your preparedness is to have a friend ask you questions and even throw in a few curveballs. This way you can also get comfortable with responding to different questions.

Tricky Question: Tell Me About Yourself

Many employees like to say “tell me about yourself” but what do I talk about? My work experience? Skills? Hobbies? The answer is actually all of the above! Take a look at the template listed below to see how to incorporate all of these points!

  • Context Statement: Introduction that tells the listener why you’re there and helps grab their attention
  • Background: Skills and how you developed them, brief reference to specific jobs or experiences
  • Connection: Share how your skills, interests, and qualifications align with what you like about the employer
  • Pivot: End by expressing gratitude and your enthusiasm for learning more about the opportunity; handing the interview back to the interviewer

Sample Answer:

Thanks for having me! I’m [Your Name], and I recently worked as a [Your Job Title] at [Previous Company], where I gained experience in [specific skill, e.g., project management]. I’ve developed strong skills in [relevant area], like leading a project that [mention achievement].

What excites me about this role at [Company Name] is how my skills in [mention skill] align with your focus on [company mission/value]. I’m eager to learn more and discuss how I can contribute to your team!

Navigating the Tough Questions

Interviewers love to ask tough questions like “What is your greatest weakness?” or “Tell me about a time you had a conflict at work” but it’s important not to shy away from answering. Say a legitimate weakness, but finish with concrete examples of how you are working to improve it. For example, Allie struggles with public speaking so she became a tour guide to practice speaking in front of groups of people and has since seen improvement! If you’ve had a conflict, briefly mention it and then focus on how you overcame it. Turn those negatives into opportunities to highlight your strengths and growth!

Some Additional Pro Tips!

  • Keep your wording and terminology positive
  • Do NOT speak poorly about a previous employer or company
  • It’s okay if you get stumped – ask for more time to think or to repeat the question
