Wednesday, June 12: Cultivating Connections Day

Each week you spend a significant amount of time with your colleagues and building authentic relationships in any team is key.  The goal of this day is to cultivate a more caring and supportive atmosphere at work and it doesn’t need to be complicated. Here are some ideas to get you started:

Invest your time in connecting with your colleagues through non-work related conversation. Find out about their family, their favorite UDairy flavor, or their plans for summer. Investing in conversation can build better relationships, better trust, and allow for a more productive and enjoyable workplace. This is great for emotional wellbeing.
A simple gesture of appreciation can go a long way in making a coworker feel valued. Identify ways that you and your team can extend gratitude- whether it be a formal recognition system or simply thanking one another for your hard work on a project, come up with ways to show appreciation and gratitude for your team.
Pick up bagels on your way to work, organize a pot luck lunch, or coordinate a team activity over your lunch break. These simple niceties and treats every now and then go a long way in creating a positive team culture.
Take a fitness class together (employee fitness classes are free in June!), organize a team lunch, take a planet walk around The Green, see a movie together, or even have office show and tell! There are unlimited options to have a bit of fun at work, bringing your team closer together and keeping your culture positive.
Creativity can fuel our relationships and our work. Create a family showcase where you dedicate a wall to family and pets where employees can put up a photo of their pet or family to share with everyone, hire a caricature artist to come in and create pieces of the employees for them to keep and lighten the mood, or bring in board games for the lunch hour.
Studies consistently show that volunteering or getting involved with community groups can improve your sense of purpose and decrease stress. Identify a University or community organization that you and your team can get involved with. Spending this time with one another will also strengthen your bond as colleagues.

Please note- the employee talent show has been canceled.
