Select Adjuvants Carefully

Mark VanGessel, Extension Weed Specialist; mjv@udel.edu

Over the next few days, be cautious when selecting adjuvants. We have had weather that has resulted in thin cuticle layers on the plant leaves. Overcast skies and high rainfalls does not trigger plants to develop thick cuticles.  As a result, crops are more susceptible to herbicide injury if an aggressive adjuvant program is used. When given the option of adjuvant choice, nonionic surfactant is the safest, followed by crop oil, and methylated seed oils pose the greatest risk. While crops are prone to showing herbicide injury, weeds are more susceptible to the herbicides as well.  So, consider the risk of injury when deciding on which adjuvant to use.
