Is it better to study what you love or what you think will get you a job?

This is a photo I took in Maine since photography is my passion.

Acadia National Park, Maine

After starting high school, I soon realized that I had a strong passion for photography. Luckily, my school offered black and white photography so I was able to take that. Though I have changed my mind on what to do in college and as a career later on, doesn’t mean that I simply don’t like photography anymore. My mom told me that I had to have a backup for photography because “there isn’t many photography jobs out there” and it’s “too hard to find a job in photography.” This upset me, but I had to do what was best to get a job… Right?

So, if money wasn’t an issue, I believe that it would be better to do something you love rather than something that will get you a job. If you decide to do something that will get you a job, you will end up being miserable. You have to do something you at least somewhat enjoy so you can enjoy life and relax a little. I know that for me that if I just did something that would get me a job that I didn’t like or completely love, I would dread going to work every single day. It would be a real struggle to get up in the morning and going into a job that I truly dislike or hate.

Even though my passion is photography, my art teachers made me realize that I would make a pretty good teacher because I would always be helping out in class. At that time, I found my backup plan to be a teacher. My senior year in high school I also learned that I loved psychology which is the major I have now chosen to do. I figured later on down the road I could be a psychology teacher doing photography on the side. It’s the best of both worlds! I get to do something I love and something that will get me a job… What could be better?
