Minor Spotlight: Peace and Justice Studies

Peace and Justice Studies is a new minor rooted in the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goal 16, which according to www.un.org:  “aims to promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels.” The minor promotes the skills of peacemaking and peacebuilding, which not only feel good but are at the foundation of many careers. Students in the minor take a core course in the theory and practice of peace. From there, students select courses in meditation and mindfulness, communication and leadership, historical movements, economics, and public policy making, and understanding diverse cultures and philosophies of ethics. The final course in Peacemaking and Peacebuilding synthesizes what has been learned and turns it into action. This is an interdisciplinary minor with many departments involved, including Geography, Anthropology, Economics, History, Music, Philosophy, Political Science, and many more! If you are wondering why study peace with justice? The minor’s creator’s answer is, “Peace is possible and benefits all humanity.”

Major and Minor Spotlight

Major Spotlight: Game Studies and eSports

Game Studies and eSports is a relatively new Bachelor of Arts degree in the College of Arts and Sciences (starting in the 2021-2022 academic year). This program prepares students for a wide array of careers in the ever-growing and diversifying video game field and other related areas. The Game Studies and eSports major includes an internship and a core set of classes including: Introduction to Art and Design for Games, Introduction to Programming in Games, Introduction to Game Development, Introduction to Writing for Games, Introduction to Game Studies and Introduction to eSport Management. Students are also required to select 15 credits within their focus areas: either Games, Culture and Society; Game Design and Development; or Game Industry and eSport Management. There is also a minor in Game Studies.

The high-tech Delaware eSports gaming facility located in the Perkins Student Center is a favorite spot on campus, and available for all students, no matter what they are majoring in.

Minor Spotlight: Healthcare Theatre

Healthcare Theatre has been an interprofessional education program at the University of Delaware since 2009, with the inception of a minor this current 2022-2023 academic year. This minor combines the elements of health science, acting, and communication. A student completing the minor first takes Healthcare Communication: UDSP where mock real life healthcare scenarios are acted out and assessed. This tests both the skills of the actors and healthcare provider students. Students in this minor will then go on to take Advanced Healthcare Theatre Communication, a Healthcare Theatre Internship, as well as elective courses to round out the minor requirements. These elective course are in the areas of Animal Science (Pre-Vet), Business (Organizational Behavior), Communication, Leadership, Nursing, and Theatre-all areas that one seeking a profession in may benefit from completing this minor.
