Major/Minor Spotlight: Political Science

Political science is concerned with the origin, development, and operation of political systems. Courses offered by this department cover topics such as public opinion, political ideology and social conflicts, and the election process. The department offers both a minor and major in this field of study. Students interested in learning more about government are encouraged to take POSC150: American Politics and POSC240: Global Politics.

Some of the entry level positions available to people with degrees in political science include: lobbyist, campaign operative, and legislative assistant. A legislative aide, for example, collects and analyzes data to help elected officials understand the implications of proposed legislation for their constituents. Individuals who are highly social and enterprising tend to be a good fit for this type of work.

Minor Spotlight: Global Studies

One way to enhance any major is to minor in Global Studies – the interdisciplinary study of the political and cultural foundations of global issues. All students in this minor take three core courses – ARSC300, ANTH101, and POSC270 – as well as three courses from their chosen track. Two tracks are available in this minor – Global Systems and Human Rights and Security. For more information, contact faculty director Cynthia Schmidt-Cruz.

Major Spotlight: Linguistics

Located in the College of Arts & Sciences, the Department of Linguistics & Cognitive Science offers the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Linguistics. Linguistics is concerned with the nature of language and communication, including sentence structure, word meaning, and speech sounds. Understanding these components provides a strong foundation for teaching English in other countries.

This 124 credit major has a highly flexible curriculum that enables students to complete a double major or minor in a related field of study, such as English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, or Spanish. Students interested in becoming certified to teach English as a Second Language in the United States are encouraged to learn more about the M.A. in Teaching ESL program

Major/Minor Spotlight: Communication

communication-pic-for-blogIn a job market where managers across industries identify verbal and written communication skills as valuable, students may want to consider the major in Communication, which is designed around two central goals: increasing knowledge about communication processes and their impact on society, and developing communication competencies.

For students who are interested in politics and public policy, UD offers minors in both Political Science and Political Communication. Students with this type of educational background may seek employment as lobbyists, campaign coordinators, fundraisers, or public relations managers.
