Academic Year Cultural Trip to NYC: January 2017

As part of the Cultural Immersion goals of our program, students who are active in the Upward Bound Classic program had the option to join us as we explored local cultural hotspots. From experiencing New York City and all it had to offer (from ethnic food to local attractions and sightseeing), visiting Times Square, Broadway Theatre District, Rockefeller Center, Saint Patrick Cathedral etc., and it’s ethnic neighborhoods to the downtown NYC area, Upward Bound Scholars had the opportunity to experience cultures different than their own.

Guided Excursions

The cultural trip provided by the Upward Bound Classic Program sought to enrich the cultural understanding of our program participants. Blending intentionality with planned happenstance, the excursions were designed in a way that exposed students to specific themes (social justice, healthy living, culture and the arts) while allowing time for individual exploration/shopping. Components of these immersion program included a historical perspective, a contemporary viewpoint, a cultural performance and the chance to try local/ethnic cuisine.

New York City: Academic Cultural trip, January 2017

On January 14th 2017, the Upward Bound Classic Program at the University of Delaware took 16 program participants to experience the best of the Big Apple.   The students received a truly authentic city experience as they followed their guide through the vibrant streets, colorful neighborhoods and historic landmarks of this world class destination.  The Highlighted Half-Day NYC Small-Group Tour saw some of the city’s top attractions on foot and enjoyed the personalized attention of a professional guide.

The scholars toured Wall Street in the Financial District, 911 Memorial, and covered the most popular NYC attractions while riding and enjoying the New City subway system. On the tour, the scholars were provided with historical stories and events about the city.  The student returned back to Delaware with a whole new perspective of the city.   The scholars were appreciative of the cultural trip, and they took away many things from the trip through their own personal written experience.
