Literary societies continued to be part of life at Delaware College throughout the 19th century, though their popularity was on the wane by the 1890s. While in existence, the societies always played a role in Commencement; they held their anniversary celebration programs and hosted speakers on the same weekend. Delta Phi and the Athenaen were briefly combined at the beginning of the twentieth century, before ceasing to exist around 1916.
