Jack Levy-Diedrich

Ph.D. Candidate. Jack graduated with his B.A. in Biology from Brown University with a concentration in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. Jack’s dissertation research is focused on plant regeneration, community composition, and invasion in urban forest ecosystems. By looking at the plant  community from the soil seed bank to the forest canopy, Jack’s research is aimed at understanding how different factors of the urban environment lead to differences in urban forest plant diversity and community composition. Jack hopes that this research can provide cities and managers with a better understanding of how to sustain and support biodiversity in urban  ecosystems.

Kendall McCoach

Ph.D. Candidate. Kendall earned her B.S. in Plant and Soil Science and Geology from the University of Delaware in 2020. Kendall’s dissertation research focuses on quantifying forest structure and tree growth to more accurately model urban forest biomass as a proxy for urban forest C storage. Utilizing tree-ring analysis, she is able to reconstruct past tree growth and climate response to better prepare forests for future climate conditions. After defending her dissertation, Kendall is hoping to expand her research to vulnerable forests or forests recovering from disturbance.

Katharina Kang

Ph.D. Student. Kat got her B.S. in Forensic and Investigative Science and Chemistry from Texas A&M University and her M.S. in Physical Geography from the University of North Texas. After graduating, she worked in environmental nonprofits and local government positions in Dallas, Texas before pursuing her PhD at the University of Delaware. Kat’s research focuses on understanding how urban soil C and N dynamics vary across the urban forest and how they respond to disturbances. In doing so, we can better predict carbon storage and nitrogen leaching potentials across urban forest soils to better inform urban management practices.
